2015 ILLUMINATE

Henderson Elementary School is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six. It’s an exciting, week long summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems, turn ordinary into extraordinary and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills while rotating through several fascinating modules. Camp runs from August 3rd-7th  with Sarah Willey (
willeysl@pwcs.edu)  serving as Director of the Illuminate program! The program will be held at Fitzgerald Elementary School (since Henderson is under renovation). The hours of camp are 9:00am-3:30pm.

In the KartWheel™ module, children let their engineering skills glide them across the finish line as they build, enhance and upgrade their very own freestyle racing cart. Boys and girls will explore what it means to prototype a product from scratch as they become an entrepreneur during the Design Studio: Illuminate™ module. In the I Can Invent: Next Level Gamers™ module, participants will take apart broken or unused appliances using real tools to create a physical video game model in the 3rd dimension! Finally, in the Inducted™ module, personalized video challenges from National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees are introduced along with hands-on activities like constructing super-structure mega-towers, assembling out-of-this-world space rockets and so much more!

Ms.Jones, Mrs. McAuley, Mrs. Baum and Mrs. Trost will instruct the program modules and enthusiastic high school and college students will serve as Leadership Interns ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

Every registration includes a complimentary Camp Invention t-shirt. Availability is limited, so visit
www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to secure your child’s spot today!

Every Minute Counts
     Every  Minute  Counts

Every Minute Counts! is the name we have given to Henderson's Reading Incentive program.

What You Need to Know
We are asking you to track your child's reading minutes each week AT HOME. (Your child's teacher will track the number of minutes read each week in school.) All types of reading are accepted and encouraged (including recipes, magazines, comics, graphic novels, game directions etc.) Listening to you read aloud at home may also go on your student's reading log! Your child's AT HOME reading calendar log will be turned in first thing on Friday mornings for our amazing parent volunteers to tally toward our school wide goal of

6 MILLION MINUTES!

We know from research that the more time children spend reading, the higher their reading achievement. Our goal is to help each child make accelerated progress while building the gift of a life-long reading habit!

Avoid Marketing Scams

We have been alerted that at least one for-profit company has been targeting the families of Prince William County Students with offers to sell an expensive education-related product and the claim that it is endorsed by the School Division. Please be aware that Prince William County Schools does not endorse or encourage the sale of commercial products to our students. While advertising is allowed on Prince William County websites and other locations, this is not a product endorsement and families should resist any sales pitch that suggests that Prince William County Public Schools recommends the purchase of a specific item.
